"If we keep producing plastic and not disposing of it correctly, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea." - The World Economic Forum, 2016

In Australia, where a lot of our beaches are relatively clean, you can forget how big of a problem this is. But did you know that on average, we each use 130kg of plastic every year. And only 12% of that is recycled.

A lot of that plastic then ends up in our ocean and waterways. According to the WWF, 52% of sea turtles have eaten plastics, and nearly all species of sea turtle are classified as endangered.

To help, you can reduce the amount of waste entering our oceans. Use reusable coffee cups, water bottles, bags and food containers. Say no to plastic cuttlery. Pick up trash when you see it.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is an Australia-wide not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris. With over 150k volunteers, all across Australia they've conducted nearly 20,000 cleanups, removing over 16 million pieces of litter. They hold regular beach clean-ups. Check out their website or facebook page for more details.

Created in 2015 by two Aussies, the Seabin Project is helping to reduce the plastics in our oceans. Their project started with the simple idea of - if we have rubbish bins on land, then why not have them in the ocean? Since then they've won a tonne of awards and now have over 860 Seabins in 50 countries, which have captured more than 1,000,000kgs of rubbish.

The design

This shirt was inspired by all the information that I learned while trying to get a better understanding of the impact that plastic and pollution are having on marine life, in particular sea turtles. My hope is that by making people more aware of the facts will help them to be more mindful and educated. Every time I wear my shirt it serves as a constant reminder to bring my reusable coffee cup, and pick up any litter I see.

This regular fit tee is ridiculously comfortable. Perfect for every day wear, or even to work-out in.

• Regular fit • Crew neck • Mid weight, 180 GSM 100% Combed Cotton (aka soft and a little thicker) • Fabric pre-shrunk to minimise shrinkage • Double needle bottom hems, side seemed, shoulder to shoulder tape
